Postdoctoral position (m/f/d) in "Neurobiology of Magnetoreception"

caesar is a neuroethology institute located in Bonn that studies how the collective activity of the vast numbers of interconnected neurons in the brain gives rise to the plethora of animal behaviors. Our research spans a large range of scales from the nano-scale imaging of brain circuitry, to large-scale functional imaging of brain circuitry during behavior, to the quantification of natural animal behaviors

The Max Planck Research Group “Neurobiology of Magnetoreception” headed by Dr. E.P. Malkemper is offering a

Postdoctoral position (m/f/d)

The position is available from April 1st 2021.

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated scientist interested in studying the neural basis of the magnetic sense. We use African mole-rats as a model system to study magnetic orientation in mammals. The successful candidate is expected to explore new methods (Multi-SEM, TEM, Synchrotron-XRF, nitrogen-vacancy center imag-ing, MRI-QSM, µ-CT) to screen mole-rat tissues for iron-based magnetoreceptors. More information about the group can be found at www.malkemper-lab.com

What we expect from you:

  • A team-oriented, flexible personality driven by curiosity and ambition
  • A Masters/PhD with a strong background in biology, neuroscience and/or (geo-) physics
  • Experience in electron microscopy or other of the above mentioned imaging methods
  • Experience with histology is not a must

About the institute:

caesar is part of a cluster for neuroscience in the Bonn-Cologne region, comprising the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases and two Max Planck Institutes. The Institute hosts the International Max Planck Research School for Brain & Behavior and is involved in the Bonn International Graduate School of Neuroscience. caesar is committed to diversity and inclusion and is aiming to increase the percentage of women in areas where they are under-represented. We therefore explicitly encourage women to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status. In addition, the Research Center strives for gender equality and diversity. We welcome applications from any background.
