A brief timeline of caesar

caesar (1998 – 2006)

11.07.1995caesar, center of advanced european studies and research, is founded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the federal state North Rhine-Westphalia.
31.08.1998The foundation board appoints Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Hoffmann as scientific-technical member of the board of directors and founding director of caesar.
01.02.1999Dr. Hartwig Bechte takes up his work as administrative director of the caesar board.
26.05.2004The Scientific Council submits a written comment regarding the center of european studies and research.

caesar (since 2006)

02.06.2006The foundation board resolves to focus caesar's scientific work on neurosciences and decides upon the association of caesar with the Max Planck Society maintaining tasks and legal structure as legally independent foundation.
2007The scientific management of the research center is taken over temporarily by the scientific members of the board Prof. Dr. Herbert Waldmann, MPI of Molecular Physiology and Prof. Dr. Erwin Neher, MPI for Biophysical Chemistry.
16.07.2007The foundation board appoints Prof. Dr. U. B. Kaupp as scientific director.
01.01.2008Prof. Dr. U. B. Kaupp takes up his work as scientific director at caesar. The first department "Molecular Sensory Systems" is being established and starts its scientific work.
01.11.2009Gertrud Bilski takes up her work as administrative director of the caesar board.
15.09.2013Neurophysiologist Dr. Jason Kerr, previously a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, becomes the second director. His work is dedicated to studying how mammals use vision to make decisions and the underlying neural mechanisms. His department develops high-resolution techniques to study the freely behaving animal.
01.06.2017Caesar appoints a third director, Dr. Kevin Briggman. His work is dedicated to fundamental questions regarding the neurobiology of behavior, as well as imaging and mapping of neuronal networks. His department utilizes the latest experimental and analytical techniques in engineering, computational and experimental neuroscience.
31.07.2017Prof. U.B. Kaupp retires. He continues to lead an emeritus group at caesar.
18.07.2018Helmut Kolz takes up his work as administrative director of the caesar board.
