Delusions, hallucinations and speech disorders - these are just some of the manifold symptoms of schizophrenia. About one per cent of the world's population suffers from this serious mental illness during their lifetime.

What are the causes of schizophrenia? Scientists assume that in addition to environmental influences, a large number of genes contribute to the risk of suffering from this disease. In a large international study a few years ago, 108 regions in the genotype were identified, which are suspected of being involved in the development of schizophrenia. The results suggest that, among other things, the immune system contributes to the development of schizophrenic psychoses.

Prof. Dr. Markus M. Nöthen, Director of the Institute for Human Genetics at the Bonn University Hospital, describes in his presentation the influence of the genetic factors on the cause of schizophrenia and possible therapeutic approaches.
