Basic research

Knowledge is everywhere, where does knowledge come from?
Humans are deeply curious beings. We owe countless fundamental discoveries to our desire to understand the world. Basic research is the best way to broaden our horizon and to push the boundaries of our knowledge and of our technologies.

Our Research Groups

The Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology of Behavior – caesar is part of the Max Planck Society, Germany's most successful research organization. The currently 85 Max Planck Institutes and facilities conduct basic research in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences and the humanities.

Basic research does not explicitly work towards a certain product or an intended practical application. However, curiosity-driven research is still indispensable and provides the basis for new materials, applications and medical treatments. As Max Planck himself once stated: "Insight must precede application". From the exploration into the unknown came some very surprising and world changing insights. Basic research lays the foundations and charts the scientific territory, a solid base of knowledge, leading toward novel applications.
